The initial “carriers” of much of the emotion and energy of the environmental movement were the battle against the most obvious aspects of industrial pollution – belching smokestacks and oozing pipes – and the rethinking of Nature and wilderness as threatened by human activity. But the real aim and purpose of the environmental movement as a whole was – and is – to raise questions about the whole trajectory of the modern world.
